BY QUIRMBACH, BACON, ANDERSON, BARTZ, BEALL, BEHN, BERTRAND, BLACK, BOETTGER, BOLKCOM, BOWMAN, CHELGREN, COURTNEY, DANIELSON, DEARDEN, DIX, DOTZLER, DVORSKY, ERNST, FEENSTRA, FRAISE, GREINER, GRONSTAL, HAHN, HAMERLINCK, HANCOCK, HATCH, HOGG, HORN, HOUSER, JOCHUM, JOHNSON, KAPUCIAN, KETTERING, KIBBIE, MATHIS, McCOY, McKINLEY, RAGAN, RIELLY, SCHOENJAHN, SENG, SEYMOUR, SMITH, SODDERS, SORENSON, WARD, WHITVER, WILHELM, and ZAUN 1 1 A Resolution recognizing Dr. Dan Shechtman of the Iowa 1 2 State University College of Engineering, the United 1 3 States Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory, and 1 4 Technion=Israel Institute of Technology on his 1 5 receipt of the 2011 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. 1 6 WHEREAS, Dr. Shechtman serves as a professor 1 7 of materials science and engineering at Iowa State 1 8 University; research scientist at the United 1 9 States Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory; and 1 10 distinguished professor at Technion=Israel Institute of 1 11 Technology in Haifa, Israel; and 1 12 WHEREAS, on the morning of April 8, 1982, Dr. 1 13 Shechtman discovered the existence of quasicrystals, a 1 14 new atomic structure for solid materials; and 1 15 WHEREAS, this structure was previously thought 1 16 to be impossible by the scientific and engineering 1 17 community; and 1 18 WHEREAS, Dr. Shechtman endured significant 1 19 skepticism and criticism from professional peers but 1 20 stood firm in his convictions and in the accuracy and 2 1 import of this discovery; and 2 2 WHEREAS, Dr. Shechtman's findings were independently 2 3 confirmed by other researchers around the world, 2 4 including scientists at the United States Department of 2 5 Energy's Ames Laboratory and Iowa State University; and 2 6 WHEREAS, the discovery of quasicrystals resulted in 2 7 textbooks being rewritten; and 2 8 WHEREAS, the discovery of quasicrystals has 2 9 increased knowledge and the fundamental understanding 2 10 of solid materials; and 2 11 WHEREAS, in 2004, Dr. Shechtman joined Iowa State 2 12 University as a professor of materials science and 2 13 engineering in the College of Engineering and the 2 14 United States Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory, 2 15 as a research scientist; and 2 16 WHEREAS, he continues to teach students and conduct 2 17 research in Iowa; and 2 18 WHEREAS, in recognition of his groundbreaking 2 19 scientific achievements, the Royal Swedish Academy of 2 20 Sciences awarded Dr. Shechtman the 2011 Nobel Prize in 2 21 Chemistry; NOW THEREFORE, 2 22 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate honors 2 23 Dr. Dan Shechtman for his groundbreaking discovery of 2 24 quasicrystals, his perseverance, and his contributions 2 25 to teaching and research at Iowa State University and 2 26 the Ames Laboratory, which culminated in his receipt of 2 27 the 2011 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
